As the Head of Learning in a leading UK art museum, one of my greatest pleasures is showing visitors of all ages and backgrounds that they already have most of the things they need to enjoy great art. Drawing on almost 30 years experience of teaching and researching art history in university and gallery settings, I believe that empathy, curiosity and instinct are the best foundations for connecting with art in ways that are life-affirming and authentic.
My training (an MA Hons from the University of Glasgow, and an MA and PhD from the University of Essex) focussed on the great masters of the European tradition, which remain close to my heart. Since then, my work in modern and contemporary art galleries has led me to a passion for the early days of modernism, women modernist artists, and an interest in artistic ‘scenes’.
I look forward to meeting like-minded art lovers – from curious beginners to old hands – to celebrate, explore and discuss some of the world’s most inspiring artworks.
