This half-day session will focus on how artists in the European tradition added layers of hidden meaning into their depictions of the physical world. We’ll start with painted stories, sensitising ourselves to the way in which the artists created visual drama through colour, light, posture, gesture and space. We’ll also look at the fascinating world of symbols, discovering the hidden meanings in everyday objects. We won’t focus on any particular era or movement in art. Rather, the tips and strategies you’ll learn in this session can be applied to any Old Masters in the classical European tradition.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Easy and fun strategies for reading painted stories and getting deeper into their visual drama.
  • A familiarity with the use of symbols in European painting from around 1300-1750.
  • Strategies for learning new stories and symbols, and how to use these to unlock the deeper emotional, spiritual and moral dimensions of an artwork.
  • Confidence in your own curiosity, and how to build on this to dig deeper into the complex visual references contained in old paintings.

How You’ll Learn:

  • In a relaxed, friendly, and welcoming environment, with free tea/coffee making facilities, pastries and fruit.
  • Through close-looking at artworks, using high quality digital images
  • Through mindful reflection on your own emotional and personal responses
  • By developing and refining your own curiosity-based questions, and exploring for answers in a range of fascinating materials provided as part of the session.
  • Through friendly, informal discussion with class-mates
