This half-day session will introduce you to range of fun and effective strategies for looking at and appreciating some of the most beautiful paintings in European Art history. Using simple prompts, I’ll show you how you can build on your basic human sensitivity to colour and design, your curiosity, and your natural empathy, to develop deep connections with the Old Masters. I’ll show you how easy it is to find out for yourself just enough information to bring the works to life, and how to trust your own instincts and language when sharing your responses with others. I’ll finish up with some tips and strategies for getting the most from your visits to major galleries and museums.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The art of close looking
  • Easy and fun strategies for honing your eye to appreciate colour and composition.
  • A familiarity with the main materials and techniques of classical European painting.
  • A visual sensitivity to the traditional modes of expression used in European painting from around 1300-1750.
  • Confidence in your own instincts and responses, and how to build on these to dig deeper into the context in which the works were made.

How You’ll Learn:

  • In a relaxed, friendly, and welcoming environment, with free tea/coffee making facilities, pastries and fruit.
  • Through close-looking at artworks, using high quality digital images
  • Through mindful reflection on your own emotional and personal responses
  • By developing and refining your own curiosity-based questions, and exploring for answers in a range of fascinating materials provided as part of the session.
  • Through friendly, informal discussion with class-mates
